Is SimpleSwap Safe? What the Track Record Shows

Not a single yes-or-no fact. It's a track record built from a specific custody model, years of continuous operation, and how outside parties — wallets, aggregators, reviewers — have treated the product. Six signals, below.

Six Track-Record Signals

Each one is independently checkable; none of them rests on SimpleSwap's own word alone.

  • 1

Self-custodial by design, not by claim

Funds move from a wallet you own to a wallet you own. SimpleSwap doesn't run an order book or hold a standing user balance, so there's no pooled fund on the platform that could be frozen, mismanaged or lost the way it was at FTX, Celsius or Mt. Gox.

  • 2

    Operating continuously since 2018

The product has stayed online through every crypto market cycle since launch, including the downturns that closed a long list of centralized platforms.

  • 3

Volume at a scale that's hard to fake

20M+ swaps processed for 10M+ users with 99.9% uptime. A track record that long, at that volume, is difficult to sustain without the underlying mechanics actually working as described.

  • 4

Legal documentation sits in the open

Terms of Service, Privacy Policy, Affiliate Terms and the Anti-Financial Crime and KYC Policy are all published on the site, not summarized secondhand or withheld until asked for.

  • 5

6,000+ partners ran their own due diligence first

The swap engine is integrated into wallets including Exodus (NYSE-listed), Tangem, Ellipal, Cake Wallet and Tonkeeper. Each of those products vetted the integration before shipping it to their own users — a check SimpleSwap doesn't perform on itself.

  • 6

    Independently rated, not just self-reported

A 4.1 "Great" TrustScore on Trustpilot from 2,600+ reviews, and a 4.5-out-of-5 user rating on Cryptoradar. Neither number is set by SimpleSwap. The full breakdown is on Evidence.

What the Custody Model Actually Removes

The comparison that matters isn't SimpleSwap against a promise. It's self-custody against the alternative.

On a centralized exchange, your crypto sits in the exchange's wallet until you withdraw it. If that exchange is hacked, becomes insolvent, freezes withdrawals, or is hit by regulatory action, your funds are exposed for as long as they sit there. FTX, Celsius and Mt. Gox are the cases that made this concrete rather than theoretical.

On SimpleSwap, a swap is one bounded transaction: your crypto leaves your wallet and arrives in a wallet you own, with no ongoing balance held on the platform in between. There's nothing sitting on the service for a breach or insolvency to reach.

Where Verification Still Applies

Self-custodial doesn't mean unregulated end to end — it means verification is scoped to specific situations rather than a blanket account requirement.

Fiat purchases route through payment partners such as Mercuryo, Simplex and Guardarian, and those partners apply their own KYC checks before releasing funds.

A specific crypto-to-crypto swap can be paused for a compliance check if something in transaction screening needs clarifying — not as a blanket policy, but case by case. Source-of-funds documents may be requested through official support; wallet keys or seed phrases never are.

The Counterparty the Custody Model Cannot Vouch For

Self-custody removes a specific worry: no standing balance sits with the service, so there is no pot to lose. What it cannot tell you is anything about the wallet at the far end of the transfer. That gap is what Address Check addresses — a Customer Account tool that screens an address for links to sanctioned entities and other risk categories and hands back a risk level with the connections it found.

Outgoing

The address of a stranger reveals nothing by inspection. Its transaction record is a different matter, and that record is what gets read.

Incoming

Provenance travels with the coins. Money that passed a sanctioned entity or an exploit upstream can raise flags wherever it goes next, no matter who is holding it now.

The flow is short: open the tool from the account menu, enter the address and its network, read the level and expand the detail behind it. Each run is saved and searchable, and the full report is mailed to the account address. How many runs you get per month follows your Loyalty tier:

Address Check allowance by Loyalty level
Loyalty levelChecks per month
Bronze5 checks
Silver10 checks
Gold15 checks
Platinum25 checks

Registration starts you at Bronze. The allowance shows beneath the field and refills every month.

The reading has limits worth stating. Screening is carried out by outside providers and will not surface everything. A low level means nothing turned up in the categories it covers — not that the holder is trustworthy, and not a promise about how any exchange or wallet will handle those funds later. A high level is not a verdict either: an address can pick up taint several hops removed, and deposit addresses at exchanges mix traffic from people who never met. The call to continue remains yours.

Treat it as an addition, not a substitute. Verifying the address character by character, confirming the network fits the asset, and testing an unfamiliar route with a small amount are still yours to do.
